KidSight

Problems with eyesight and vision are most often associated with aging, less so with younger people and rarely with children. But childhood eyesight and vision issues are common.

Lions Foundation of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario owns highly specialized, sophisticated cameras that can easily and quickly detect vision issues in children aged six months to six years. Most vision issues detected at this age are reversible with a simple intervention. Without early detection, these issues are often more difficult to correct and eyesight may be affected for the rest of the child’s life.

KidSight is a free vision screening program for children, delivered by the Lions Foundation of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario in partnership with regional Lions Clubs.

Using specialized, hands-free screening technology, KidSight helps identify potential vision issues in children aged 6 months to 18 years. Screenings are quick and gentle, taking only seconds to complete.

KidSight is offered at no cost to families and takes place directly in schools, daycares, and community events.

Good vision is critical to a child’s learning, development, and confidence — yet many vision problems go unnoticed.

  • Children often don’t realize they aren’t seeing clearly.
  • Vision issues can affect reading, learning, and behaviour.
  • Early detection leads to better outcomes and simpler treatment.

By identifying potential concerns early, KidSight helps ensure children receive the support they need before vision issues affect their daily lives.

KidSight screenings are designed to be simple, fast, and child-friendly.

  • Screenings are hands-free and non-invasive
  • Children simply look toward a specialized camera for a few seconds.
  • Advanced technology detects potential vision concerns almost instantly.
  • Families and schools are notified if a follow-up with an eye care professional is recommended.

KidSight is a screening tool, not a diagnosis, and there is no obligation or cost to participate.

KidSight is delivered by trained Lions volunteers, supported by the Lions Foundation.

  • All volunteers are fully trained and hold current police record checks and child safety clearances.
  • Screenings are conducted with care, respect, and sensitivity.
  • The program is supported by a network of 78 Lions Clubs across Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.

If a screening indicates a potential concern:

  • Families receive clear guidance on next steps.
  • A follow-up visit with an eye care professional may be recommended.
  • Early referrals help address issues before they affect learning or development.
  • Financial assistance may be available to help cover the cost of glasses or other vision care.
